Four Tennessee basketball players, including starting senior forward Tyler Smith, were charged with gun possession and other counts after a Friday traffic stop.
The Knoxville Police Department said Smith, 23, junior point guard Melvin Goins, 22, junior center Brian Williams, 22, and sophomore guard Cameron Tatum, 21, were arrested during a traffic stop for speeding near Tennessee's campus.
According to a police report, officers smelled marijuana coming from the car and found a handgun with an altered serial number, a bag of marijuana and an open container of alcohol. Tatum was driving.
Officers could not determine whether any of the players were under the influence of marijuana, though the strong odor suggested marijuana had recently been smoked in the car, the police report said.
Tatum was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and having an open container of alcohol. Smith was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, which is a felony. Goins and Williams both face gun and drug possession charges.
Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement that the team takes such matters seriously.
"We are still gathering information. Once the appropriate authorities have provided us with all of the facts, we will act accordingly," Pearl said in the statement.
It was not immediately clear if any of the players had attorneys.
The Volunteers won at Memphis 66-59 on Thursday afternoon and face Charlotte in Knoxville on Wednesday

Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas is currently the subject of an NBA investigation over firearms he possibly stored in his locker in the past.

According to ESPN, the NBA confirmed the rumors, but said the container was locked and stored without any ammunition.

After the team found out, they notified the league and local authorities since it violated NBA rules.

The Wizards and Arenas say they "are cooperating fully with law enforcement during its review of this matter and will have no further comment at this time," according to the Wizards' statement.

The team's spokesman Scott Hall didn't divulge any details about when or where, but told the Washington Times on Christmas Eve (December 24) that the incident in question happened about two weeks ago.

"It happened like December 10th. Right after my daughter was born," Arenas said. "I decided I didn't want the guns in my house and around the kids anymore, so I took them to my lock box at Verizon Center. Then like a week later, I turned them over to team security and told them to hand them over to the police, because I don't want them anymore. I wouldn't have brought them to D.C. had I known the rules. After my daughter was born, I was just like, I don't need these anymore."

Arenas recently welcomed his third child, Hamiley Penny, earlier this month. His first daughter, Izela, turned 4 on Thursday.

While the NBA allows its players to legally possess firearms, it prohibits them being brought to league facilities or when traveling on any league-related business.

"We're aware of the situation and are working to gain a full understanding of the facts and relevant legal issues," the NBA said in a release.

This isn't the first time a player violated these gun rules. In 2006, Los Angeles Clippers guard Sebastian Telfair was suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount after a loaded handgun -- registered to his girlfriend -- was found in his pillowcase aboard the team's plane when he was with Portland.

According to the Washington Post, Arenas has not been charged with a crime yet.

At press time, it was unclear if the league will take any action regarding the incident.

While most of us saw confetti flying through the air on New Year's Eve, some lucky Californians watched as Travis Pastrana sailed through the sky to shatter the world record for the longest ever rally car jump.

In a hop that unofficially measured 274 feet, Pastrana travelled from Long Beach, Calif.'s Pine Street Pier onto a barge anchored in harbor, the Associated Press reports.

Pastrana's jump over 200 feet of water occurred at Red Bull's New Years, No Limits series.

If the distance turns out to be accurate, Pastrana will have surpassed the previous record by 103 feet.

Several thousand people watched as the 25-year-old thrill seeker warmed up on the 1,000-foot run-in only to fly across the water a little after midnight.

Upon landing, Pastrana's Subaru skidded and slammed into the barge's wall, but the driver appeared unfazed. He proceeded to run to the end of the barge and backflip into the water he had just crossed.

Ken Block, Pastrana's Subaru teammate, set the old jump record of 171 feet three years ago. Pastrana had said that he wanted to bypass Block's record by over 100 feet, which he just managed last night by 3 feet.

Pastrana rose to rally driving fame in 1999 when at the age of 15 he celebrated his gold medal at the X Games by jumping his motorcycle into the San Francisco Bay.

He is known for being the first to perform a double backflip on a motorbike.
